Dago Gil was born in New York, moved to LA, and raised in Miami since the age of 12. He is the son of immigrant parents of central and South American decent. From early on he has always had a passion for Latin music and hip-hop. Due to his cultural influences he is able to live and operate freely in both the American and Spanish markets.

His first album released in 2005 entitled “Almost Famous” reminded us it is never too late to seek out your dream and grab hold of it. In his sophomore mix tape “West Side Hialeah Story”, he invites us to recall the places of our youth, the friends we’ve loved and lost in order to appreciate the present. Unable to complete is Untitled Junior album in its entirety; due to his incarceration his family and friends released “Free Dago”.

After a 3-year time sentence he rejoined society more focused and determined to share the Free Dago vision. Dago Gil currently has three tracks riding the crest of the wave off his latest 12-track album, “Free Dago World Music”; the Latino influenced “Envidia”(prod by Flawless Tracks), “Naked” (prod. by Swollen Drumz) and “Push” (prod. by Bravestarr).

I came across Dago just recently when I downloaded one of his mixtapes on Datpiff. I was really impressed with his presence and control over the various beats. While his peers are making cookie cutter mainstream knock-offs, Dago goes deeper in with his lyrics, while staying connected to the streets.

Dago Gil is one of the very few new rappers out there that knows how to tell compelling stories. This is a real man that has something to say about the world. Dago tells stories of struggles from his point of view and real issues that not a lot of rappers are capable of telling convincingly nowadays. Yes, issues such as bad relationships, violence, drugs, and being an underdog have been touched before; however Dago Gil does it in such a real way that it is undeniable that this emcee understands the world in a much broader sense than your regular college kid.

At first listen, Dago Gil is one of the the easiest people to listen to, his voice and personality  needs no warming up to, it is just smooth sailing as the beats and words flow into your head. The production on the album is incredible to say the least, every track is different, which is what I love best about the album. You have some slow burners, but  Dago Gil also shows signs of aggressive wordplay with tracks featuring rough and rugged beats like “Freestyle No Shame”, which just goes to show how lyrically raw Dago Gil is as a true emcee.

The album has some cool dance tracks as well such as “Spaceship” and “Recuerdo” which helps diversify the album a bit more. But the real heartfelt tracks, with stories such as “Do It Like That”, “It’s On Now” and “High Society” is where Dago capitalizes his artistry. Dago Gil raps with such sure-footedness that he positively propels the album as it goes on. His flow is awesome; he can easily switch up at almost any time with no sign of slack. Once again, Dago Gil really knows how to paint vivid pictures filled with social commentary and real positive messages. There is a lot of substance on this album and he is really thought provoking throughout.

I will just say that this is the direction Hip Hop music should be taking. It is really exciting to hear on“Free Dago World Music”, what Dago has in stores for listeners in the future. Dago Gil is just a breath of fresh air in the game!
