Martyn Snapes is a singer songwriter from Milton Keynes, UK. Martyn’s most notable achievements to date were a major recording deal with EMI, a publishing deal with Warner Chappel Music and a European tour supporting American supergroup Chicago. Martyn has released his album Digging Up The Dirt. He also fronts the excellent Rebel Yell which plays selected tracks from the album and a classy selection of covers.
The beauty of Martin’s music is both the casual ease he seems to effortlessly slip into, and the way his songs just manage to stick in your head. At first listen, you’ll always find one or two songs that stand out, and certainly the others are good, but not necessarily great. But then, they get stuck. Try as you might, you simply can’t get them out of your head. And it’s at this point that you realize, all these other songs are just as great. And by that time, you realize just how beautiful Digging Up The Dirt is.
Many cultures recognize the blessings and the wisdom that come from experience–from living life, taking the shots and the knocks, and coming away from it all with some good stories to tell. And that, along with a serious desire and ability to kick butt musically, is what Martyn Snapes brings to the table with Digging Up The Dirt.
It is a work of great maturity and insight. Written, sung, played, arranged, and produced with great passion by Martyn Snapes this album is a powerful reflection of the soul. This album resonates with pure, uncluttered songwriting. This to me is the pinnacle of honest sound and honest performance. Quiet songs stay quiet and are unashamedly gentle. Rocking songs let loose and stick it to you in the grand old rock n’ roll tradition.
The genius is in the simplicity. And not everyone can make a masterpiece with simplicity but Martyn Snapes did and it will touch your soul when you hear it. When listening to these songs you can’t help but think about your life and the good times and bad times you’ve had. Love, broken hearts, successes and broken dreams, and just living life, it’s all here.
Of the twelve tracks, the standouts include: “Here and Now”, “Say It With Passion”, “The Wasting Kind”, “The Class of 99”, “Eye To Eye”, “World In Action” and “Heads You Win”.
Digging Up The Dirt is truly a wonderful album. The thing that makes the album so great is the fact that Martyn Snapes really gave each of the songs a personal message, that just about anyone can relate to. Every song has a meaning that’s worth listening closely to.
Whether it’s the rockers or the ballads, there’s something here for everyone. Martyn Snapes is simply good at what he does, and he continues to show the world his straightforward Americana rock style, with overwhelmingly positive results.
So kick back, turn the lights off, and just listen to a personal journey and a great album!
