Just one year later, he was playing shows and at the age of fifteen, Junichi began studying music. In fact, In recognition of his talents, the Berklee College of Music awarded Junichi the merit-based World Tour Scholarship, which enabled him to move to Boston in August 2010 and intensify his studies. Junichi graduated in Performance in May 2012. During 2013, after many deeply exhilarating musical experiences in the USA, Junichi moved back to Japan, and started to work on recording his own compositions, something he had always wanted to do.

Junichi Arima is easily one of the most adventurous artists out there now, completely unwilling to go along with people’s expectations. It’s almost as if free form acid-jazz, electronica, hip-hop and experimental music joined in, creating a new genre consisting of diverse components that have a central running theme throughout. You could call Junichi’s style any thing you like really, as long as you call it art! This inspiring and adventurous aural experience is presented tastefully, cohesively and above all artistically.

23 Summit Ave / In Your Ear is seriously a complex and profound work of music. Junichi has taken this hybrid music mix to a new ground with synthetic and organic sounds, plus a fiery bass that fit the themes perfectly. For an Ep that spans only 6 minutes, Junichi conveys all his emotions and ideas extremely well, submerging the listener with a wash-over sound that leaves ears astounded by the varying sound palette.

Both “23 Summit Aveand “In Your Earare thoughtful, beautiful, emotive, and well-produced. These are laudable efforts. Subsequent listens reveal a more nuanced approach to each song’s composition and breed longevity for one’s interest. It is certainly exciting to see where Junichi Arima will jump from here. He has demonstrated a thorough understanding of music’s core elements and is able to morph this knowledge into a new sound kaleidoscope on each of his efforts.

The melodies on his tracks are hidden beneath layers of sounds, samples and rhythms. I think that some people on first listen to Junichi might be expecting to be taken on a rapid thrill or be blown out of their chairs, but his strength lies in the fact that there is no attempt to do these things. He is deeply exploring variations of soundscapes and taking you along for the ride. Unfolding his sound colors, bar after bar until you are totally hypnotized.

23 Summit Ave / In Your Ear is what an artist that likes to use today’s readily available array of electronic tricks would sound like if they were sent back in time. The electronics are hip and trendy, but they are only a support to what Junichi Arima is trying to achieve. The entire Ep crackles with cool energy and technical ability, while the tracks have a vitality born of music largely created with physical instruments. The music is flush with vibrancy and soul. Junichi Arima hints at the past, but lives in the present while seriously pointing toward the future!
