Michael Blu is a seasoned songwriter, vocalist and producer, who recently released ‘Mr. Spaceman’ – a new album featuring eleven original numbers and a host of extremely talented musicians. The album is a follow-up to 2013’s ‘Release My Soul,’ a mystical fusion of Blu’s eclectic tastes and talents.

Few solo independent artists have singlehandedly pulled off what Michael Blu accomplishes with ‘Mr. Spaceman’ – a perfect album! Do not let this album slip through the cracks of the studio floor, into the land of lost album classics. Plug it in, sit up…and listen!

When you stumble upon a treasure like this, you will be drawn to it, like the proverbial moth to a flame. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t a particular song that attracted me, but the entire album itself. The glorious music will leave you speechless. The lyrics are impeccable and the complex rhythmical arrangements are refreshing. Furthermore Michael Blu gives his vocal cords a real work-out here and succeeds gracefully.

I am impressed at the diversity and emotional power with which Blu writes and performs. He easily moves from eclectic ballads like “The Giant” and “Under the Moon” to driving funky rock n’ roll such as “Marry Me Girl” and “In This World”, with a little alternative Indie-Pop like “Mr.Spaceman” and “Choka Clean” mixed in between.

But there is so much more going on in this album. Songs like “I Need You” features a breezy acoustic rhythm and some fantastic flute interludes, while there are impressively spiraling string arrangements on “Listen” and “Big Blue Rose”.

There is never a dull moment with Michael Blu. He is an awesome talent, and one of the things I like most about Blu, is he tries new things all the time, throughout the arrangements. Like the unexpected saxophone interpositions in “Under The Moon”, but this happens almost everywhere as Blu and his crew inject sounds, phrases, solos and effects across the multitude of musical bars and bridges on this album.

The whole album is quite remarkable in its total disrespect for what the audience or commercial institutions might currently think. Michael Blu does as he pleases and takes his great musicianship even higher with these crossover compositions, as well as showing what an original artist he is.

Spanning from acoustic instrumentations to dramatic, adrenalin-rushing funky pieces and rockier tunes, Blu has one common concept in mind – and that’s sublime quality. Be that composition, performance or production. Not one sound, note or syllable seems to be included anywhere by chance. There are few albums made today, of any genre, and in any library that possess such power in music, voice and lyrics.

‘Mr. Spaceman’ lasts long enough to get immersed in, and savor; Blu’s perfection is further showcased in the distinct track-listing – there is a beginning, a middle, and the climax that leaves the listener with breathless exhaustion from listening to 40 minutes of emotional, intricately woven songs, varied in style, and all full of soul and sheer beauty!

Michael Blu pulls from his own fairy-tale romance for many of his ideas and lyrical themes on the album. Blu met his wife, Francesca at one of the last shows of his very successful group, Venus Pumping.

“After working the L.A music scene for ten years, I met my wife Francesca at one of Venus Pumping’s last concerts. I sang the entire show to her, losing the rest of the audience. Love at first sight. After the show, she said she was leaving for Italy first thing in the morning and that she had to go. I watched her walk down Melrose Blvd at two in the morning as she waved a sad goodbye from afar. I knew she was the woman I was going to marry.”

Michael and Francesca were reunited after her trip abroad and married eight months after that. Now, the couple have been married for thirteen years, happily living in Texas with their two sons, ages three and six.
