Roger Cole & Paul Barrere’s music and lyrics are complex and demands multiple listening’s before you can fully digest what they put into it. I just love their fusion of blues, country, folk and rock. Their lyrics always tell you a story or describe an experience and make you think. The use of guitars on their tracks allows the instrument to `talk’ and evoke emotion – from happiness and joy to sadness and grief, without ever falling into the guitar heroics, style of playing. Some of their songs actually might motivate you to kick up your feet and start dancing.

Roger Cole & Paul Barrere seem to be getting better with age and certainly on each subsequent release. Every time a new release comes around I don’t hesitate to listen to it with great pleasure. This was the case with “MARY”, as once again the duo delivers a song that speaks to every man and woman.

“LEANING ON THE SHOULDER OF A PICTURE ON THE WALL / LISTENING TO THE LYRIC OF SOME FORGOTTEN SONG
THE MELODY ESCAPES HER / HOW SHE WISHES SHE COULD RECALL
SHE KNOWS IT ONCE HELD MEANING, A MEANING FOR IT ALL”

Sing Roger Cole & Paul Barrere as they take a deeper look at existence and the lives of the aged, in this case “MARY”.

“WHO’S TO SAY YOU’RE ON YOUR WAY / TO SOME OTHER PLACE, ON SOME OTHER DAY
THERE’S NO VOICE THAT CAN TRULY SAY / THE LOOK ON THEIR FACES ALWAYS GIVES THEM AWAY
THEY’RE JUST TRYING TO FIND A SOLUTION”

Clearly these two musicians and songwriters have produced yet another gem, this time giving almost anyone over the age of 40 a piece of music to embrace and to think about. This is the kind of socially conscious song you’d expect from Tom Petty at his best!

These are grown men at the top of their game, so sit back with a pair of headphones on and a cold beer or a glass of wine and just listen. Roger Cole & Paul Barrere are simply spectacular, playing together seamlessly. And even if they were tone deaf, Roger Cole & Paul Barrere could probably be excellent short story writers, as their messages and thoughts come across loud and clear throughout their lyrics.

“MARY” is a great thought-provoking track that should give encouragement to real musicians and music lovers everywhere. It’s always appreciated when real artists like Roger Cole & Paul Barrere release original self-written, self-performed material in a world of pop crap where no-one even writes their own songs anymore. They just parade around the internet and television talent shows, wishing that they could.

“MARY” is a thoughtful, well-played, and durable tune which will please many ears!
