Strange Theories is four-piece rock group from Lafayette, LA, formed in 2015. The band has built up a loyal following in the South Louisiana region and now have their sights set on national and international recognition. Their brand new single, “Wiped Out”, is the first step in gaining that kind of attention. There are so many things right with this single and its production that I don’t know where to start. First off, I think that Gabe, the lead vocalist for the band, has such an incredible tone that catches your attention from the start and never lets it wander.
Next, the band itself puts forth instrumentation that is great all on its own. Also, the track is the fusion of modern alternative rock and plain old catchy pop, which makes it really interesting. Together this exciting and slightly addicting mix keep your ears glued from start to finish.
I’m always looking for new bands to fall for, and I was immediately hooked by this song, both musically and lyrically. This is very different than what I usually listen to, so I was surprised at myself for liking it so much. Now understand that I’m new to Strange Theories, but I totally dig it. I’ve been playing this single for days now, I can’t seem to stop… and the weird thing is, I don’t want to either.
This band proves once again, if still necessary, that you don’t have to be totally groundbreaking, or wildly experimental to captivate audiences. Sometimes you can just take the ordinary bits in music and make it into something extraordinary, by the sheer power of peerless execution.
Strange Theories, with “Wiped Out”, take a really good song and turn it into a totally great song. There are no wasted gimmickry or overblown production, they stick to the basics of a clean arrangement and a strong melody garnished with lush harmony and warm instrumentation.
Parker Ardoin (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals), Lane Foreman (Drums, Backing Vocals), Gabe Broussard (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Keyboard) and Stephan Palumbo (Bass), go ahead and tear down all the preening and pomposity embedded into some instances of this genre. The band’s sonic palette seems to be void of excess.
It’s a song that’s ostensibly about growing up and out of a romantic relationship. It’s soulful, penetrating and addictive. I really think this track will catch a new audience, like it caught me. What Strange Theories have made with “Wiped Out” is a body of work that sounds effortless and sophisticated. Who knows where they’ll go from here!
