Kimberly Marie (feat. 3 Doors Down) does Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” tremendous justice, capturing the defiance of the original with ease. For me, this song is personal. I grew up with Alanis Morissette’s album “Jagged Little Pill” as a mainstay on the airwaves throughout my entire childhood in New York. There is something so visceral about the piece, about the way Alanis could really belt it out and capture the anguish that comes from an ex, and Kimberly’s sheer delivery works wonders. She takes on this piece and imbues it with new meaning, given the state of the world in this exact moment. With a nice revisiting of the 90s underway in the culture, it feels particularly poignant.

References abound throughout the entirety of the piece. Of course, undeniably present is Alanis Morissette’s influence that serves as the very soul of the recording. Beyond this though, there are nods to Courtney Love’s work with Hole, for it has a righteous fury about it that feels on edge.

Volume is a must, for theirs is a sound that truly should be admired, as nothing is held back at all. They scream through the track like a force of nature, making sure it all comes together with the greatest of ease.

The drumming is completely on point, for there is a nimbleness to it, one that revels in its dexterity. By allowing it all to filter on, they hold absolutely nothing back. Kimberly Marie’s voice has the same sort of commanding presence as the original, perhaps with a bit of a grunge edge to it.

Building the tension up and up, feels outright visceral, and the physicality has a vividness to it. Guitars additionally swing on through and there is a bright, brilliant blur to the entirety to the work. The finale has an earned urgency as it races towards the finish.

Nicely embodying the ethos of the 90s with a neat modern twist, Kimberly Marie (feat. 3 Doors Down) offers a thoughtful take on that tried-and-true classic “You Oughta Know”.
