Austrian-born, Sweden-based guitarist Simon Ostini presents his debut solo album, Witches, a richly textured instrumental record that channels the spirit of 80s shred guitar while exploring broader classical-inspired arrangements.
Ostini’s musical foundation was built through years of experience as lead guitarist for the hard rock band StageFright, contributing to their full-length album Wanted and EP Still Dirty. International touring and studio work with the band sharpened his technical skills and stagecraft, laying the groundwork for a solo project that combines intense guitar work with cinematic musicality.
Witches stands out for its fusion of virtuosic guitar shredding with layered synths, strings, and organ sounds, creating a dramatic and atmospheric soundscape. The album is steeped in the aesthetics of 80s instrumental rock – fast, precise, and melodic – but Ostini expands this foundation by weaving in classical textures and a wider dynamic range.
“I’ve always loved the energy and virtuosity of those old ’80s glam metal solos, but classical music has fascinated me for its depth and emotion. With Witches, I somehow wanted to bring those two together, combining technical guitar work with more atmospheric elements,” Ostini explains.
Critical reception of Witches has been largely positive, with many reviewers praising Ostini’s impressive technique and phrasing abilities. However, some critiques point to a tendency toward extended technical passages that at times overshadow the flow of the songs. The album occasionally struggles with pacing, as virtuosic displays sometimes come at the expense of concise songwriting and emotional resonance.
Nonetheless, when Ostini dials back the intensity and focuses on mood and phrasing, Witches reveals moments of genuine narrative and cinematic depth.
