“Earthquakes”, in my opinion, marks yet transition from normal lyricist to thoroughbred songwriter for Charles Luck. After several diverse hip hop and pop flavored releases, he has just dropped this new and dynamic EDM single produced by Ian Hanks, featuring the sublime vocals of Addie and rapper-singer, Tino Red. Soon, Charles will no longer be the underground writer that only a few people know about and as such, his music keeps changing and adapting, crossing all boundaries to reach new listeners. Yet an interesting struggle arises as a result from this.

How can you both, please your hardcore fans, market to new listeners, and make a song that you yourself are happy with. This was a concern of mine going into the track and I was pleasantly surprised at how the song was managed. Thankfully, Charles Luck is able to channel his talent and make a record that, although different, is exceptional in quality and grandeur and is one which truly shows off his, and his collaborators’ capabilities.

The first thing that should be noted is just how clean this track sounds.  The sound is exceptionally crisp and the transitions between verses are very smooth. The single’s cover too, quickly takes you to the track’s theme. The complexity of “Earthquakes” is stunning and the sound is extremely cutting edge throughout, retaining that classic Black Astronaut energy that we are familiar with. Everything that is a staple of modern EDM music is present in the song and singer Addie shows a remarkable ability to add her own uniqueness to the classic dance tropes.

The sounds utilizes the standard electronic beat formula of the past but incorporate a plethora of effects, twisted instruments, vocal hooks and the usual solid rap verse by Tino Red. The song, looking at it strictly from a technical perspective, is absolutely satisfying yet again.

The energy and power of Addie’s voice combined with the fast-paced sound of the electronic components of the music make something that is extremely reminiscent of past hit dance songs. It’s difficult not to physically, want to do something, when these types of songs are being listened to, and it is not surprising to see many of these songs get onto the Billboard charts, because they seem just the sort of songs that people would love to hear over a radio, as much as in the club.

The ability of Charles Luck’s songs to put an individual into a ‘mood’, whatever that mood may be, has thankfully not been lost here, and has actually progressed, and “Earthquakes” showcases that perfectly. What I think personally completely steals the track is Addie’s voice. The power and emotion of the Luck’s words come to life when she sings. You can’t help but feel zeal. It’s absolutely beautiful and the listener feels every emotion associated with the lyrics through her beautiful, crisp, and elegant voice.

Tino Red’s voice, on the other hand is as impressive as always, though this time wearing its rapper clothes. We all know that the different notes his singing voice can strike perfectly is absolutely stunning, but here he gives us a taste of his rapping skills.

The Charles Luck songs of the past were composed and sung in such a distinctive style. They had a rawness and a sense of underdog care and attention put into them that one easily fell in love with his music. As I listened to “Earthquakes”, I wondered whether Luck himself is using this track as a way of soul-searching and pondering.

Looking at current events, a sense of nostalgia for the past, and fear of the future define this track and make it distinctive in its own special way. Charles Luck has once again sparked an ecstasy of expectations, emotions, and reaction. In all, “Earthquakes” is a fantastic EDM track that makes me hunger for Luck’s next work…if only to see which direction he will be taking!
