Julian Alexander Coiner, aged 21, is from Caroll, Maryland, sadly, lost his Mother, Maya Boston, on June 19, 2015, and though he faces many emotions of loss and despair, Julian is adamant to pursue his passion for making innovative music. If like me, you think that much of Pop on the radio sounds generic to the point of being absolutely disposable and interchangeable, well, throw that notion out of your head and ears where Julian, from the group, Faceless Ones, is concerned. His songs are infectious ear worms and heart wrenching tunes all moving forward compellingly with the drive of Julian’s stellar, jaw-dropping vocals.

What’s better than listening to Julian singing? Julian singing layer upon layers of rich harmonies and counter melodies. In no time you will become accustomed to his impossible high notes as well as his luscious lower register. On his latest track “Love Letter”, the instrumental and electronic backing also comes in layers of colors, sounds and textures. Put together, this track gets better and better with each listening, as your ears discover more and more sonic and lyrical depths.

“Love Letter” is an amazing, cohesive work of art. With the impressive soaring vocals, the maturity and depth of the song writing, one could call this pop music for grown-ups. I have to say right up front that I don’t like much pop music. I don’t like the simple-mindedness and arrogance, the lack of freshness, the sub-par instrumentals; I don’t like the over-the-board electronics and production. The state of the genre in 2015 is in my opinion abysmal: studded with over-inflated ‘stars’ who little talent, no real vocal ability and non-innovative songs.

Julian’s music, especially through “Love Letters” has re-introduced me to what I loved about pop years ago. They are musically and sonically superior to much of what is out there, and Julian’s soaring, sure-footed vocals are the icing on the cake. There is genuine beauty to every urgent line of this song, and though almost melancholic and dreamy in its delivery, “Love Letters” sounds so glorious it is impossible not to feel buoyantly alive when listening to it. Julian has taken for his subject nothing less than one long overwhelming confession of love, longing and losing. And he has succeeded wildly in creating an empathic emotional thread leading straight to the listener’s heart.

An intensely emotional song, the sway and drive of “Love Letters” fills you with yearning and loss. It uncovers your fears, breaks your heart, but eventually makes you stronger from the inside out. Listening to “Love Letters” just substantiates the fact that Julian is a sensible, caring and passionate being with an irresistible singing talent bathed in musical genius.
