Mr. P Chillis an independent hip hop emcee and producer with over two decades of experience as a recording and touring artist. Beginning his career as a recording artist in Sacramento, CA in 1992, Chill has not only embraced what it means to be an emcee, but has also shown a flair for entrepreneurship as he has chosen the path of independence. By 2007, Chill was performing an average of 50-60 shows a year all over California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, while maintaining a full time day job.

In 2010, after burning the candle at both ends for a decade, Mr. P Chill went walked away from the 9 to 5 and devoted 100% of his energy to music and touring. Chill spends on average, ⅔ of every calendar year on the road, performing songs, selling merchandise, and most importantly, connecting with fans. With the forthcoming release of his 11th full length album, “Still Standing”, there is no sign that this 41-year-old Sacramento legend is stopping any time soon.

If you are a fan of hip-hop and rap, and find yourself constantly bogged down by the stuff heard on MTV and the radio; pick-up Mr. P Chill’s “Still Standing”. You’d be hard pressed to find a track out of the twelve on it, you don’t like. The album sort of traces a story through Chill’s working life and his experiences over the years. Its central theme is to be found in its title, “Still Standing” and the album’s opening song – which addresses the challenge of never giving up and holding onto your dreams, something Chill has clearly managed to do in his 23-year career.

But he even finds the time to pay tribute to his fans, as together with a beat by producer MILOGIC, Chill rolls out a head-nodding track entitled, “You Got Me” – dedicated to his devoted fans more appropriately known as Chilligan’s Army. The album winds into “No Regrets”, perhaps one of the most powerful and authentic old-school songs here. It features hip-hop legend Spyder-D and was produced by 3rd Child. “When Words Won’t Do”, the first single from the album, is also one of my personal favorites. Here Chill has teamed up with Los Angeles hip hop legend 2Mex of The Visionaries, to tell us about the things words just won’t describe perfectly.

Mr. P Chill’s is a skilled lyricist and delivers premium rhymes throughout this album, and the musical chemistry between him and each and every production is exceptional. This is highly evidenced on “Time Machine”, where Chill describes how he would like to go back in time and “warn people of the errors in our ways…” Nowhere else can you hear hip-hop like “Another Damn Crew Song (w/Decarie Black, Ms. La, DJ Double Ace, J.Smo, Lumis, Ian C and Poetic Supanova)” today; you’ll need to go back to the nineties to find anything close!

Since the late 90’s, mainstream hip hop has taken a very unpleasant turn with the main focus being money, cars, women and the other materialistic things that have been the sole motivation for getting a record deal and releasing albums full of pure garbage. The release of “Still Standing” once again gives us the correct formula and dose of hip hop that true fans would respect and appreciate.

Songs like “Criminal” and “Veteran Status” with Percee P, breathes life into a genre that has seemingly lost its way. Chill’s voice and lyrics shine through everything, and he never at any time, sounds in awe of his illustrious guests. “Spiritual Journey” and “You Got The Best Of Me (w/Mr. Hooper & Lumis)” is hip-hop at its finest, a poetic display of true feelings and emotions spit skillfully over divine beats.

Someone thoughtfully said that, “Hip-hop isn’t about being black or white, or about growing up in the streets or in an upper-middle class suburb. Hip-hop is about expressing what you truly feel in a clever rhetoric.” Hardly anyone fits this definition as well as Mr. P Chill. On “Still Standing”, he displays the unbelievable ability to break the rules of predictable and monotonous mainstream hip-hop and deliver an outstanding piece of work.
