Ben and Andrew of the project, Owlcat, play 5 or 6 instruments apiece, and have deejayed most of their lives as well. When band-mates seemed to become unreliable, they knew they could materialize their musical visions and that’s what they did by forming Owlcat. They have now released their EP, entitled, “Metamorph”, which dances between pure Dubstep and Hybrid Trap flavorings. The wobble and wub and the crunching bass in this five-song package of eccentric, tenacious and just plain banging music is ready to assault your eardrums from the opening track “Alarmclock”.
The electronic sound of the modern age is possibly the most confusing scene around. On the one hand you have the artists who accept its chart driven limitations, they make a song, make sure it’s a banger, cash the cheque and bow out.
Most make their career on singles that follow the same repetitive pattern and get away with it because in essence there are very few electronic artists who are able to coherently create a body of music. This is one of the many reasons why the dudes in Owlcat are such competent artists. In a genre where it is more than easy to lose any distinction in your sound, they are able to swim against the current.
“Metamorph” not only takes in all of these attributes but also manages to showcase a large amount of musical progression in the Dubstep genre. Ben and Andrew throw down gut wrenchingly heavy bass drops and violent hooks that will keep your ears glued to the sound system. All spiced up with crazy samples and sounds.
Beginning with a jaunty thumping beat and roaring synth induced pulsations, reminiscent of a more evil side of the duo’s sound, “Candy Step” that will rapidly turn heads. “New Dawn” is a soulfully inspired concoction of vocals, plodding percussion and breezy pop induced synths.
It’s an odd mix which somehow contributes to a definitive layered sound seemingly building into a fast approaching drop which, in true dub style, would smash through the song like nail bomb – it doesn’t happen, but again Owlcat’s trickery succeeds in holding your attention until the end.
As if that mix of electronic pandemonium wasn’t enough, “WTF Damn” builds to a beautiful soundscape of noise. The atmospheric pulse of synths and drums is reminiscent of more rock inspired rhythms. “Watch Me Blaze Ya”, is a song meant to knock down the walls of any club by just turning up the volume. Stuffed with vocal effects and an incessant beat, this tune will twist and wrap itself around you.
Owlcat deliver a brand of dark, brooding and heavy Dubstep flavors. This is as strong and well-crafted collection of songs ridden with a kaleidoscope of pulsating electronica that threatens to hit the realms of heavy into orbit. Essentially it is a fusion of everything that makes up Dubstep and its derivatives and only strengthens the ability of Owlcat to uphold their unique sound.
