Pennsylvanian born Kahlil Cade’s sense of ambition in his craft caught the attention of Sowyte, an astounding producer, from British Columbia, who found him while surfing the Soundcloud website. After listening to Sowyte’s beats and admiring the idea of Sowyte releasing an album for every season of the year, with a different artist for each season, Cade could not help but to be excited about the collaboration. The result of their blending talents turns out to be none other than the 6 track EP, entitled simply, “The Summer – EP”. This is a great recording, it is incredibly underground, which I believe is part of the appeal. Kahlil Cade and Sowyte have no attachments to a record label holding them back or influencing them in any way. Thus you receive a sound that you will not find in any other place.
When Kahlil Cade does what he does, he’s impossible to ignore. He’s fun, he’s impressive, and he’s damn entertaining. In short, he’s one of the better underground rappers going. Cade’s voice is one of the best parts about his sound.
His voice soothes the soul while it blasts rhymes at about 100 words a minute. Third track “Beautifugly” is a perfect example of this. A soft psychedelic keyboard is looped throughout the song over a fairly off-kilter drum beat. The track also features some wickedly clever lyrics.
Kahlil Cade’s rapping is again impressive on “Country” (feat. Aria Kai), as his diction is clear and he sounds like his telling you the story right up against your ear. The light atmosphere on this track largely stems from the fantastic, bouncy, bright and just all around awesome production, Sowyte forges here.
Aria Kai rounds it all off nicely with her melodic hook. It’s the same energizing vibe Cade and Sowyte bring on “What You Want”. For the flipside of the coin, just switch to “Back To Cali” to catch Cade on slow and mesmerizing beat. Purely hypnotic stuff!
The team obviously left the best track for last, as “Yellow Tape” showcases their combined talents, from stunning beat to stellar rap, all laced in a thick melody and driving mid-tempo rhythm. “The Summer – EP” doesn’t need to rely on hype train as it’s powered by nuclear locomotives in the form of talent and creativity.
Sometimes close to mainstream, at others slightly abstract, but never completely outside of the catchy and relatable atmosphere that makes this recording so endearing.
In today’s hip hop world where it seems most everything is “shake that ass girl” and “pop that pussy”, it’s extremely refreshing to know that there are still a handful of artists that care about putting out quality music that doesn’t conform to what major labels want it to be just because it needs to play on the radio or the club.
Now don’t get me wrong, Cade can get the girls to shake their asses and pop their pussies, but he does it with style, as witnessed on “What You Want”.
Sowyte’s production is out of this world, and is a perfect match for Kahlil Cade’s sophisticated verses – “The Summer – EP” is ready to take off in a rocket ship and leave the competition behind until next season!
